What do Aspect3Sixty’s BS OHSAS 18001 and CHAS Accreditation’s Actually Mean?
Aspect3Sixty and our commitment to Health and Safety
It always has the potential to go wrong……..
A quote I regularly use when assessing job requirements and carrying out rope access workscopes is, ‘it’s always alright, until it goes wrong……..’. The reason I like and use that particular saying is because it makes me stop, think and assess what I’m doing or about to do and I must credit it with part of the reason that Aspect3Sixty are extremely proud to have maintained a 100% record of Zero Accidents or Incidents.
Health and Safety Issues Affect Us All
It doesn’t matter about the job that you do, what street you walk down or which shop you choose to go in to, health and safety regulations and requirements affect each and every one of us.
The self-employed, businesses, schools, shops, hospitals etc are all legally required to consider and adhere to the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 (HASAWA) and failure to do so can result in extremely serious consequences. Though Health and Safety can more often than not be seen to be a hurdle in front of getting a job done quickly and easily, the HASAWA is designed to ensure employers protect not only the health, safety and welfare of their employees, but just as importantly its designed to protect visitors and the general public from harm caused by the work activities that are carried out around them.
Do businesses invest in their Health and Safety requirements?
A high proportion of people I know are of the opinion that their current or previous employers are not or were not as fully invested in Health and Safety matters as they should be or could have been. Concerns about the lack of correct PPE, not receiving enough training or not having the right tools or equipment for the job are all too commonplace, yet as previously stated ALL businesses (no matter what size) are required to ‘as far as is reasonably practicable’ adhere to the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, so in reality there are no excuses and nowhere to hide for anyone or any business that chooses to ignore their legal responsibilities and put themselves or others at risk from any potential hazard caused by their work activities.
How do we know which companies take their Health and Safety responsibilities seriously?
One way you can identify those UK companies which do care about their Health and Safety responsibilities and who are independently assessed to see if they meet strict and stringent criteria is to check if they are Accredited to BS OHSAS 18001: 2015 or if they are an approved member of an SSIP body such as The Contractors Health and Safety Assessment Scheme (CHAS).
If (like Aspect3Sixty are) they are certified or accredited then you can be assured that they go through a rigorous 12 monthly audit to ensure they are compliant with all of the relevant legal regulations and that they are raising and reporting any areas where they find themselves to be non-compliant; they also have to identify risks, opportunities and training requirements as well as identifying areas where they can improve. They then have to ensure that they carry out those changes in order to achieve those improvements. They also have to demonstrate that they carry out thorough and comprehensive risk assessments and demonstrate that all of the equipment, materials, PPE, chemicals etc used by the company are suitable, correct and approved for the task that they are used for.
Commitment and dedication
Now all of this does not come cheaply, it requires membership to the relevant body, dedication to the process, investment in the workforce and may require the upgrading of equipment, tools and procedures, however it is an investment that the company wants to make and the BS OHSAS 18001 and CHAS accreditations are something that they are extremely proud to have.
So next time you see a company van with either an BS OHSAS 18001 or CHAS decal (or maybe both) or you visit a website that displays those logos, then remember that companies name and be assured that they care about their employees, the public and their reputation, and that health and safety is a major factor in the day to day planning and operation of the business.
